Caversham Lock
A Furnivall and Stubbs Case.
When a parcel containing a dead baby is pulled from the Thames, detectives Furnivall and Stubbs are sent to deal with the matter. They investigate at breakneck speed- it is 1896, after all, and they have all the advantages of the modern world to help them. Using microscopes, the rail network and the telegraph, they identify the culprits- a Mrs Dyer and her daughter, Polly. Even as they close in, Mrs Dyer has been back to Caversham Lock with another victim. By the time the two women are arrested there are seven little bodies in the mortuary at Reading. Each has Mrs Dyer’s trademark white dressmaker’s tape around its neck.
The case doesn't work out as planned, however, and they're forced to travel to the west country. Despite being under strict orders to return to Reading, they set an ambush on the Clifton Suspension Bridge. But a storm is rolling in, and there is another man in Bristol – a man from the Home Office sent to clean up his superiors’ mistakes.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Set in 1896 and written in the style of that era we meet two sleuths, Furnevall, a beginning detective who has an analytical mind and notices and remembers everything, and Stubbs, somewhat older and a believer in logic, albeit he does not reject the cop's nose for perps. A dead baby is pulled out of Reading's Caversham Lock and that sets the pair into motion. They actually manage to identify their perp rather quickly but have to weather the interference of politics before bringing the case to a slightly uncomfortable end,The book is very well written and operates on multiple planes. The characters all have distinct personalities. One caution: if you come across Caversham Road by the same author, read Caversham Lock first. One flows into the other although each works well as a stand-alone novel. I loved the book

Caversham Lock the first Furnivall and Stubbs Case eBook Michael Stewart Conway Reviews
Very entertaining book, great story and very well written.I loved the way this book was written from start to finish,I could'nt put it down.
excellent read, page turner, old fashioned thriller
I gave 5 stars as really enjoyed the plot very well written! I will definitely read more from this author.
Good concept but the writing rambled and I found myself losing interest often. I am not sure if I would read any more books by this author.
At last! Excellent writing flows easily. Stubbs and Furnivall are perfect foils for each other - the first a steady, dyed-in-the-wool policeman and the second, the new type of "thinking" detective. There is even a young lady, aspiring to the police force. Touches of home life, tenderness and determination to "get their man" makes this a great read. You'll enjoy this thoroughly for many reasons.
