Rises Upward to the Wired Roof (Portland Cycle) eBook Joseph Kaye Reviews

Sometimes a book can grab you by its title alone. Rises Upwards to the Wired Roof had an immediate, original hook which I was pleased to discover continued into the plot and characters. The setting of the story is unusual and interesting, but this is counteracted by the characters' simple mission to survive. Spoiler alert - most of them don't.

An alien invasion has taken over the world and men and women are randomly "downloaded" by unknown entities. The only signs of an impending download are a series of coincidences growing in incredulity immediately before the download occurs. Some of the downloaded attack, while others begin building strange structures that change the environment. In the middle of the invasion soldiers and those left untouched by the aliens try to survive on their newly conquered planet.

Rises Upward is not an aliens versus humans story. The humans have already lost and as Julia, the lead character contemplates, everyone knows what they would do at the end of the world, not many know what they would do if they were to survive it.

This is a fast paced, easy to follow book that delivers some truly original ideas, whilst not pushing credibility. Some of the chapters could be cut to remove repetitive information and the ending is annoyingly abrupt compared to the rest of the story, but the individual plot is enough to make this a pleasurable read and I am now left panicking after every coincidence I encounter.
This book is well-written, and is a shining example of why is a great place for independent authors. The story was wonderful to read, immediately engaging, and refreshingly original. The author's voice and language are calm and easy, and his characters resonate. I highly suggest buying this book, and keeping an eye open for any other works he has out.
Julia Rodriquez, the heroine of RISES UPWARD to the WIRED ROOF, reminds me of a young Mel Gibson taking on the horrors of post-apocalyptic America, where it is difficult to determine who is friend and who is foe among the few remaining people struggling for survival. The plot is ingenious, unknown aliens rebuilding the cities of rubble that the Unites States has now become, into their own vision of the future. Survival is for only the fittest of the fittest, and these include two young children who are well versed in how to remain alive. I did feel that the book ended a bit abruptly, but there was the strongest hint (stronger than a hint really) that this is just to be the start of a continuing series, or at least the first of another book or two. The beginning established here left me with wanting to know what will happen next, a good writing technique. Stay tuned, folks, for I am certain that more is to follow. The action kept my attention throughout. It was a good read.
