3.5 stars.I regularly download free books from Amazon and I try reading them from time to time. Some are bad, some are decent, few are good. Metal Emissary by Chris Paton is somewhere in between decent and good.
I read this book mainly because I got into Bingo Challenge and needed something for my Steampunk square. I’ve already read Books of Babel and Aeronaut’s Windlass before the April 2017, so I needed something else. Why wouldn’t I give a chance to unknown author? Especially if he gives his book for free.
Metal Emissary is a alternate history Steampunk Adventure set in Central Asia in the 1850s, full of weird machines, exotic characters, dust, snow and blood. The story follows adventures of Lieutenant Jamie Hanover who seeks answers encounters regarding the British defeat at Trafalgar. Soon in the story he meets the strange mystic, Hari Singh, with whom he tracks a strange metal emissary. They meet hostile tribes, steam-powered robots and djinn.
The story starts with interesting prologue that, sadly, doesn’t pay off. At least not in this book – maybe in next instalments of the series? The story is rather fast paced and reads a bit like a comic book. The characters are rather well portrayed although they lack depth. That doesn’t mean they’re dull. They’re quite entertaining actually and well written. It’s just there’s not a lot of characters development or characters backstory. Apart from Jamie and Hari and their entertaining banter, we follow through third person POV stories of Russian Captain Bryullov and Princess Najma.
While the book was entertaining, it was confusing at times. Some things just seem to happen at random. Other than that, I suppose I wanted a better payoff for the end of the novel. Also I believe the author should work on refining his story – telling technique. It’s not bad, but it always can get better.
I feel tempted to download sequel although it won’t be near the top of my TBR list.

Metal Emissary A Steampunk Adventure with Muskets Magic and Mayhem Hanover and Singh Book 1 eBook Chris Paton Reviews
This is a fairly fast novella read. Being a part of a series though, I am curious how the characters continue. I may read and find out one day.
It was a very interesting story, that I couldn't stop reading so I finished it in a day. -)
There was lots of action and interesting development throughout the story, in a world that at times felt like it could be real, and that it was based on a true story. But, of course, it is a Steampunk Fiction, so it ends with a bang!!
Well. Put togather tail with just enough twist to keep it moving, think Indian Jones style set in ww1, with a touch magic for spice.
Metal Emissary is a fantastic book that I couldn't put down. It is a steampunk adventure set in Afghanistan. The characters are well thought out, the setting feels very real, and Chris Paton is a thorough writer who is clearly having fun living in this world he has created, which comes through for the reader as well.
A fun read, though confusing at times. Some of the action left me going back to re-read a sentence to see if a I missed something, but a great deal was implied - particularly toward the end. Some things just seem to come out of the air at random which is why I went down from my original 4-star assessment. It looks like an interesting start to a new series, however, and I expect the next one to be a good read as well.
