As other reviewers have noted, this . . . is a complicated book that doesn't accomplish what the author was hoping for. I suppose on the one hand it really could just be a dark, depressing and cynical "coming of age" tale set amidst horrendous animal abuse which everyone seems to completely ignore. All is vanity, the future is hopeless, that sort of thing. But how, then, did it get so many good reviews (here and otherwise) from folks who *saw* hope in it? There's nothing redeeming about the characters; not once did I see anyone change even in the slightest for the better.

Finally, others have also stated that the sections about equine husbandry and training are woefully off the mark, and I agree. But, again, who knows? Maybe her point was that these people either don't know what they're doing or really don't care, so I can't say for certain if this is a matter of the author's total ignorance or a stylistic choice to have the farm in the book be run by folks who could rival the cruelty found in "Black Beauty." I wish the author had written a preface or post-script addressing this issue, because I found both this possibility and the possibility that she hadn't done her research deeply unsettling.

I doubt I'll even leave this downstairs in the communal laundry room for someone else to pick up. It will most likely go in the recycling. Not recommended. :(

The God of Animals A Novel Aryn Kyle 9781416533245 Books Reviews

Seems like it's geared towards younger readers but be aware there are some moments of violence/animal cruelty. It's easy to finish in a week.
I'll start by saying I think Ms. Kyle writes well. I found her characters sufficiently complex to be interesting, and Alice, in particular, was well done. When she writes another novel, I will probably read it - as long as the subject matter is anything but horses.

I have to agree with other reviewers who wondered why the manuscript wasn't turned over to a horseman for a reality check before going to publication. For particulars, read Frances Ransley's review entitled, "Like Horse Whisperer Only Worse". I concur with everything she had to say about the book's inaccuracies with regards to showing, breeding, stable management, and just about everything to do with what was, unfortunately, a central subject. For example, when Alice won a reining class on a barely trained, intractable mare, the book skittered from inaccuracy to outright fantasy. In other instances, the characters' actions simply didn't make sense. Why would Alice's father (or anyone) spend all his ready cash, plus borrowed money, to buy a mare he viewed as "an investment", then subject her to abuse? In particular, turning her out with a band of strange broodmares to be kicked, bitten, and chased around the pasture - risking a serious injury, permanent scarring, and the loss of his investment. It's impossible to believe anyone would be that stupid.

It is apparent from reading the many enthused reviews here, that most readers found the book touching and memorable. But I want to warn readers who are knowledgeable about horses, this one will make you cringe.
Loved the character development in this book and all the detail about horse raising, breeding and showing. The book can be sad and dark in parts, and I felt a little unsatisfied with the ending (it felt as if the author didn't know how to end the book), but overall the God of Animals was very well written and I couldn't put it down (stayed up all night reading the last 80 pages!!)
Was introduced to this book in undergrad... I could read it over and over. As the author's first writing, I was blown away... incredible. I would recommend to anyone.
Five stars for this young author's beautifully poetic and lyrical writing style. I did find the voice, however, to be an unsuitable match for its sixth-grade narrator. I kept having to remind myself that she was only twelve years old. Overall, the story will entertain all ages. Sit back and enjoy the language in this little gem.
When reading this book, I hated it but could not put it down. I own horses and though not involved in the breeding and showing of horses,I know many people who are. This is more about human relationships and is right on about many of the boarding stables and the people who board their horses as well as the owners of these stables and their hopes and dreams they have and what they will risk and put up with to get that one great horse. This is not a feel good book but will keep you hooked from start to finish.
This story takes place on a horse ranch in the West. The character-development is rich and deep and moves like silk throughout the story. Animals play a role, but the relationships between family members and the community create the complex movements of the story. I can hardly put this book down! The 12 y.o. protagonist is discovering her way into adolescence without much help from her parents, who are not unkind, while working as hard as her father, while her mother lies mysteriously ill in bed. I forget I'm reading a story, I am so completely involved with especially Alice, the 12 y.o. kid who is strong, confused, wise, a little lost, and bursting out of her too-small clothes that no one seems to notice. This is a book I do not want to end! I heartily recommend this remarkable book!
